Theater I

Mondays 11am-1pm OR 1:30pm-3:30pm
Backlight’s primary theater class that produces a mainstream Broadway musical in partnership with a local professional theater each year featuring Backlight students.
This year Theater 1 students will learn and perform “Shrek, the Musical” in partnership with The Nashville Children’s Theater. Performances on April 30 & May 1 2022. No auditions necessary but all new students will need to set up an introductory meeting with class instructor prior to being casted.

Theater II
September 2021-June 2022
Thursdays 12pm-2pm
Theater II is Backlight’s secondary theater class that works with a more intimate group to dive deeper into how to strengthen creative abilities and utilize them in smaller varying productions. The first half of the term is spent learning a small-scale holiday performance and in the second half of the term, students receive the opportunity to write original plays which are then performed in a dramatic reading by local professional actors. Music

Tuesdays 12pm-2pm
This year in Backlight Music, students will work together to start a band and learn a set of songs that can be performed and recorded with local professional musicians. Students can play instruments and/or sing and learn basic music theory, rhythms, chords and vocal technique as they work toward playing together as a group. Register by clicking the button below!

Dance Team
September 2021-June 2022

Introducing our new COMPETITIVE dance team! Our Backlight Dance Team will work on developing technique and routines to be used in both our holiday performance as well as a Spring dance competition with other dance organizations that serve the ID/D community. Backstage
September 2021-May 2022
Fridays 3:30pm-5:30pm
Backlight Backstage creates an opportunity for students to learn what happens behind the scenes in the theater world – everything from costumes, props, sets, tech, stage management, crew, and directing. Backstage students will work as a production team to produce 2 original works written by Backlight students. First half of the term, students will produce a play performed by local professional actors and Backlight students and, second half of term, students will produce a film performed by local professional actors and Backlight students. Creative Movement
September 2021-April 2022
Fridays 4pm-5pm
Creative Movement classes are for students who require more direct assistance. These classes will focus primarily on dance while also incorporating activities in theater and music. Students may participate either virtually or in person depending on preference but all may participate in the Backlight Productions holiday performance in December as well as the production of “Shrek, The Musical” in partnership with the Nashville Children’s Theater in April 2022.
*Every student or student group in this class must have caretaker assistance provided to participate
